An event held at the Puchong Perdana Lake on July 3 has raised the eyebrows of the SPCA (Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Selangor. According to Christine Chin, the chairman of the SPCA Selangor, the ‘Chicken and Duck Catching competition’ was an act of cruelty. Slamming the event and its organizers Subang Jaya Municipal Council, those involved could be charged for animal cruelty as stated in Section 43 of the Animals Act 1953 that forbids any person who causes unnecessary pain, suffering and distress to animals.

The competition required the women to catch chicken in a large area while the men had to wade into the lake to try and catch the ducks. She said that instead of using animals in carnivals and for entertainment, the council should organize more constructive and useful activities. SPCA is protesting with the council that there should not be any future activities would involve animals or could cause them pain or distress in any way. In response to the allegations, the council has denied that the activities of the carnival which were aimed to foster closer relationship among the community were any act of animal cruelty because no animals were harmed. Furthermore they have not received any official complaints whatsoever from either the SPCA or any other parties.
